La La Land leads BAFTA nominations

La La Land is quick-stepping into the awards season, gaining 11 nominations for this year’s British Academy Film Awards.
The fast-paced, sweet-tempered musical is not just winning hearts at home, but seems to have taken the UK by storm, dominating the British equivalent of the Oscars.
Damien Chazelle’s homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood is up for best film, as well as the main technical categories, including original music, cinematography, editing, production design, costume design and sound.
The film’s leading actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who play a couple of star-crossed lovers trying to make it in the “city of stars”, are also up for best leading actor and actress.

Following the success of La La Land are Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival and Tom Ford’s dark thriller Nocturnal Animals – earning nine nominations each.

Arrival receives nominations for best film, adapted screenplay, original music, cinematography, editing, sound and special visual effects, as well as director for Denis Villeneuve and leading actress for Amy Adams.
Ford’s Animals earned a surprise nomination for lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as cinematography, editing and director.

Not so surprising was the nomination of its supporting actor, Britain’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who comes fresh off a Golden Globe win for the same role.
“It’s always nice to feel love from your hometown,” he said in a statement.
“I’m deeply grateful to BAFTA for the acknowledgment and extremely proud of my friends Tom Ford and Jake Gyllenhaal,” he added.
“Can’t wait to celebrate back in good ole Blighty!”

Coming-of-age drama Moonlight has come out a little shorter than expected, picking up just four nominations, including best film and original screenplay.
Barry Jenkins’ film about a black gay man growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami was tipped to come out on top, after becoming the most awarded movie of the year so far.

Other surprises this year include nods for Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in the leading actress category for her roles in Florence Foster Jenkins and The Girl On The Train.
The 2017 Bafta Film Awards will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 12 February.
